The Wheels on the Bus

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Sew Cute: I have been busy with the typical seasonal sewing and hair bowing for the upcoming kid-friendly celebrations of St. Valentine's, spring, and even a little of St. Patrick's day.  However, I have been having even more fun with my new toy.  Here is a peek at it:What is it? What does it do? Just wait and see.  I have so many clever ideas and projects in my mind that my head may just burst if I don't get some of them out soon! I don't scrapbook AT ALL, so all of my ideas are for home decor and other craft embellishment uses.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Taste Test: Here is a quick and tasty recipe that I enjoyed while at a friend's home recently.  Sometimes the simple recipes surprise you with their belly-warming comfort.  This is not one of the "healthy" items to add to your regular menu but it is an easy appetizer with only 3 ingredients and would make a terrific afternoon/afterschool snack.  I call them Mushroom Pinwheels.  Here's what you'll need to keep the kids full until suppertime: 2 rolls refrigerated crescent rolls, 1 bar cream cheese, softened, and 1 can mushrooms.

1.  Preheat your oven to 375 degrees, open your can of crescent rolls, and here we go.
2.  Open the rolls onto your workspace and flatten them into a rectangle with your rolling pin as shown.
3.  Spread the dough with half of the softened cream cheese.

4.  Sprinkle generously with half of the mushrooms. (This was the part my kids enjoyed).  Have your ungreased baking sheet standing by.
 5.  Beginning at either end, short or wide does not matter, roll up the dough rectangle.  I prefer to start at the long side, which is NOT what is pictured here.
6.  Using your sharpest knife, carefully slice through the rolled dough layers.  This is similar to making my cinnamon rolls here.  From this point you will place the slices on your cookie sheet and bake as directed, usually about 13 minutes.  These are best enjoyed while still warm.  I hope you like them.

Family Matters: This school year has really been buzzing by.  Between music lessons, park days, field trips, museums, libraries, errands, Classical Conversations, and friend's houses we are out of the house at least 3 days per week.  Having a plan for each trip in the car is essential to my sanity.  I keep the fighting and whining knixed and take comfort in knowing that car time will not be wasted time by taking the following steps:
  •  Be prepared: it seems so simple but this first step is the key to the whole puzzle.  If you're enjoying a baby during this season of life, keep the diaper bag refilled and ready to leave as soon as you return from the last trip.  Hang it on a hook by the door.  You know, a place for everything and everything in it's place.  The same goes for tots.  Have a special bag with toys, snacks and books that are for car rides only.  Grab their cup and you're out the door.
  • Use your library's reservation system to provide you with a world of educational resources such as audio books and language CD's.  Audio books were such a hit with the kids that I began to look for other audio resources. To my utter amazement I found everything from multiplication table music, historical textbooks in story form, biographies of famous musicians, missionaries and inventors, to life sciences on CDs. To top it off, several of the resources had included activities for further study via games we were able to enjoy in the car. This prompted our discovery of many more games and tools for learning every subject imaginable while on the road.
  • Limit your vehicular video viewing.  I know almost every car has a DVD player now.  So?   Just as you would not allow limitless viewing at home, don't plunk your kids down in front of the set every time you get in the car.  Set guidelines for enjoying videos so that they will remain a special diversion.  My kiddos know that if we're going to be in the car less than 2  hours we won't be watching a movie.  It also helps stave off that "entertain me" mentality many young people seem to have.  This has proven so beneficial for us.  We have many of our most meaningful and memorable discussions of life, faith, and just plain fun while in the car chatting freely with each other.  We've also been know to enjoy more than our fair share of Karaoke-style singing in the car too.  Don't act too shocked if we pull up beside you at a red light one day and everyone in the car is singing full throttle!
        ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Keeping Hearts and Home:  I am gathering my notes and resources as I plan to discuss courtship in my next post.  I will primarily focus more on what courtship is not vs. a "this is what you must do" approach.  Every courtship looks different, that is the beauty of allowing God to write your love story.
See You Soon,
Melissa
Where have you been?
Chores, preserving, homeschooling and fall gardening have taken a backseat these last 2 months.  I've been very busy lately with my latest creation...well, actually it's not mine at all. God did allow me to borrow this lovely little one for a while. Like the others he has blessed me with, I plan to rear this one to love and serve Him with all her heart.
Vital Stats:
Name: Merridy...means "a happy song"
Born: Two Weeks LATE!!!
Enjoying new life here,
Melissa
When Loved Ones Grow Old
Far be it from me to ever say that I have been shorted when it comes to having a great and godly grandmother. My Mamaw (as I call her) is a vivid part of many of my earliest childhood memories. Her sweet acts of generosity and service permeate the foreground of much of my adolescence. She was always going, always giving, always grinning. Now as the grips of dementia and Alzheimer's are beginning to take the best of her memories, I am determined to keep her alive in mine and those of my children as well. She is the reason that I garden, sew, cook, and keep house with any measure of success. I have many fond memories of breaking and canning beans, picking and preserving strawberries, standing still for fittings, folding laundry, and sweeping of floors with her and under her supervision. Mamaw Mertie was and is a blessing to me and I am saddened to see her in such a state. While she may not want to have to now be in the care of others, it is definitely what is best for her well-being at this time. Each time we part it becomes harder to say good-bye especially in light of the brevity of life. I would not be being truthful though if I did not admit that this parting was especially difficult for me. Moving her from her home seems so final and because of heavy tears I could not even face her after our final long embrace. Praise God for His peace! I find comfort in knowing that even if I never embrace my sweet Mamaw again on this earth, I will see her again! How good of God as I got into my vehicle to leave her home, His blessed peace was playing on my radio "Unclouded Day". Our God is too good. I thank Him for seeking me and placing in me this desire to be in constant pursuit...
Fourth of July Fun
This year our town held a 4th of July celebration that was hosted by several of the Main street churches.
We had a great time of fun, food, face painting, and fireworks.
The girls are posing here in their 4th of July outfits: I embellished some jeans and holiday tee's with ribbons to give them a festive look for the Freedom Celebration. To top them off, there were matching bows as well. They look adorable even if I do say so myself!
Just in case you were hoping for a shot of some fireworks, check out the cheeks here on Lil' Liss. She was so proud to sport her red, white and blue just for you. She held still just long enough for me to get this shot...then off to the cotton candy! You could say she was definitely in pursuit...
In Pursuit of Fun with Friends
Just a swingin'!
This year we were able to take advantage of "Homeschool Day" here at Six Flags over Georgia. We were blessed by the disounted ticket price as well as the generous lunch that was included. The offer also included a free return ticket as well which we were pleased to use on this visit with friends from our church. We had a great time and took home some very tired kiddos!
A Trip to the Tree Top
See that tiny guy on the left? This was his first trip to the top and he did it like a real trooper. What a fun first!
Beep! Beep!
Here is Freckles enjoying an old friend, Bertie the Bus, in the new "Thomas Town" kids area.
This was definitely a day of great fun and relaxation with the kids. I am looking forward to taking them again when they are ready for some more exciting rides. Tender Heart is still so afraid of many of them with any size and speed but that doesn't seem to stop Lil' Liss. She is the first one to jump in line and the first one to be disappointed when she doesn't quite measure up to the height restrictions!
A day at the park
For Family Fun Night last night we decided to go to the park. After we picked up 3 dozen free range eggs from Farmer Lady we spent some time with Margot at the park. Everyone had a great time swinging, chasing ducks and running free. Take a peek.
This week has really been one with great weather...pretty much in the 80's all week long. God is good. We have enjoyed the extended time outside. With the kiddos outdoors, I have even been able to get a few sewing projects for sale comleted and listed.
After an adventurous afternoon in the back woods, Freckles brought home 2 new friends with him...TICKS! I had to remove them and then checked the girls. They were both tick-free until bedtime when Tender Heart revealed an itchy neck fold to me that contained another blood-sucking friend...Yuck!
It rained last night and my thirsty plants and I are sure grateful for it. Everything is still looking so lush and green. Next week will be back to 90 degree temps. I'm thrilled that we got all the front beds refreshed and mulched before the scorcher days returned. The front of the house is looking great too thanks to all the bush trimming and shaping that my dear husband did.
A lovely day in May
As I look up from my sewing machine out into the yard this is the view that greets me. I am so grateful to the Lord for His goodness to me. We are all enjoying the lighter school schedule that summer affords. I am inside today planning and sewing now that today's lesons are done. My three Precious Ones are enjoying the outdoors but I am not so sure that Midnight (our new kitten) is as thankful. In time she will get used to their antics...we can hope!
In this morning's Quiet Time I was prompted to ponder the responsibilities of a friend. While I was given the opportunity to examine my own inconsistencies, failures, and successes as a friend, I was overwhelmed by the thought that my children are learning these skills as they daily encounter one another. Each day's events are not always perfect examples of lessons in friendship but I am grateful for the one's that are. Mother's we should not waste the teachable moments that come every day as a natural part of life with siblings. So many times my first inclination is to swoop in and make things better but when I wait and allow the Holy Spirit to do His work in little hearts I am often blown away at the outcome! Today's example of this was when I recieved the call from church informing me that Freckles had been chosen to return for a second audition for our summer play in which he and Dear Heart had both tried out for. Instead of rejoicing over his good news I was surprised to hear and see Freckles comfort Dear Heart when she realized she had not been chosen. Thank you Father for these occasional glimpses of You that are sent to encourage us along the way!
